2019

2nd Nov. - Daffodil, snowdrop, bluebell land fritillary bulbs planted in various areas of the garden.                                  

29th Oct. - 100 Red tulip bulbs and 200 violas planted in raised beds.                                                                                      

24th Oct. - Begonias in raised beds removed to allow winter planting.                                                                                       

 12th Sept. - 7 in a row!  - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2019 'It's Your Neighbourhood  Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING. The award was announced at a presentation ceremony held in Birmingham. 

30th Aug. - New 2 bay compost structure erected.                                                                                                                        

      13th Aug. - Remainder of compost spread over ground level border and the compost heap structure removed. New structure will be erected in near future.

     3rd Aug. - Garden inspected by Royal Horticultural Society judges. All went well and now we must wait until Sept. 12th to see if we have been able to maintain our high standard.

22nd July - RHS  Inspection now on Saturday 3rd August. Fingers crossed.                                                                           

       9th June -  200 'non stop' begonias planted in the raised beds and other borders.

  5th June -  CCTV system supplied and installed by Yellow-Hat Security Solutions Ltd. Hopefully this will prevent any future anti social behaviour.

5th June -  A herb bed planted on the left of the main path from Innage Road.                                                               

1st June - Raised beds cleared of tulips and wallflowers ready for planting begonias in the next 10 to 14 days. Red tulip bulbs removed for relocation and will be replaced in the autumn with a shorter stem variety. Many of the wallflowers replanted in borders.

29th May - Garden generated compost spread on many of the ground level borders and beds, remaining to be use as mulch for shrubs etc. 

13th May - Annual General Meeting held at the Old Fire Station, Shifnal, two new committee members elected.         

30th March - Cast iron awards plaque funded by Shifnal Town Council erected at Innage road entrance to garden.    

6th March - 20 'Desdemona' roses planted in the War Memorial Garden to replace dead and diseased 'Iceberg' roses.

1st March - First meet of volunteers this year, a very good turnout. A good start made to weed the beds and prune many of the shrubs and hedges. The roses both in the sensory garden and War Memorial garden will be pruned before the end of the month.

2018

24th Nov. - The Co-op Community Fund Payout Day was held at the Shifnal Bradford Street branch which also                  incorporated the High Street branch. Committee and volunteers were treated to cake, drinks and nibbles. Everyone connected to the Sensory Garden are most grateful to the Co-op, the staff at both branches and the local members who have supported the fund throughout the past year. The wonderful amount raised is greatly appreciated and will enable us to continue to maintain and improve the garden.                                                                                                                   

23rd Nov. - A very successful coffee morning was held at the Lakeside Plant Centre, Prioslee raising funds for the garden. Many thanks to all who attended and a special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Evans who kindly allowed us to use the centre's facilities.                                                                                                                                                                            

8th Nov. - Placed a hedgehog box in the 'wildlife' area and surrounded it with logs.

3rd Nov. - Removed begonias (very frosted) from raised beds and planted 200 mixed wallflowers and 200 yellow tulips in     their place. Thanks to the volunteers for their planting skills on the day.                                                  

19th Oct. - A very successful Musical Evening was held featuring Gabriela the Ukulele Lady. Thank you to all the helpers and the attendees for your much needed support.                                                                              

27th Sept. - Six in a row!  - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2018 'It's Your Neighbourhood  Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING. The award was announced at a presentation ceremony held in Acocks Green,      Birmingham.                                                                                                                                                            

28th June - A working party from JN Bentley of Shifnal cleaned, sanded, linseed oiled and painted ten benches and a plaque, a wonderful effort in the extremely hot conditions. The committee wish to thank all members of the party for the tremendous job they did.                                                                                                                                                      

9th June - Planted 200 mixed coloured non-stop begonias in raised beds.                                                                          

2nd June - Removed white tulips bulbs (will be replaced by yellow in the autumn) and wallflowers and prepared raised   beds for begonias.                                                                                                                                                                 

22nd March - First successful garden meet of the year.                                                                                                            

17th March - Second Saturday meet of the year cancelled due to frozen ground.                                                                    

8th March - First Thursday meet of the year cancelled due to heavy rain.                                                                               

3rd March - First Saturday garden meet of the year cancelled due to 6 inches of snow.                                                                  

2017

2nd Dec. - Final organised working party for the year. There will be weekly visits to the garden to carry out any maintenance required. The first working party meet of 2018 will be on Saturday 3rd March.                                

2nd Nov. - Planted 200 winter/spring flowering wallflowers in the eight raised beds.                                               

      31st Oct. - A very successful Antiques Valuation Evening held with valuers Christina Trevanion and Aaron Dean to who the committee would like to thank for taking time out to support our charity.                                                           

21st Oct. - Removed begonias from raised beds, dug over beds and covered with compost made from our own garden  vegetation.                                                                                                                                                                         

28th Sept. - Five in a row!  - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2017 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING. The award was announced at a presentation ceremony held in Coventry.    

 15th July - Royal Horticultural Society inspection for this year's 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award'. We should know the result in Mid September.                                                                                                                                                

 15th  June - Notified by Royal Horticultural Society that our 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award 2017' inspection will take place on Sat. 15th July.                                                                                                                                                 

6th June - Planted 200 Yellow and pink non stop begonias in raised beds.                                                                   

3rd June - Cleared raised beds of wallflowers and tulips in read for planting begonias.                                                 

3rd May - Constructed a 'Bug and Small Mammal Hotel' alongside the woodland walk pathway'                                   

4th March - First meeting of the year for the volunteers and helpers. Debris from the recent storm Doris cleared up and  general tidying up and pruning carried out. Leaf clearance and rose pruning had been done prior to this first meeting.

23rd Jan. - First recording of a Goldcrest in the garden, it was seen creeping up the trunk of one of the flowering pear trees.                                                                                                                                            

       13th Jan. - We are extremely sad to announce the death of our president Mr. Peter Drabble. Peterbwas a founding              member of the garden committee in 1998 and was for many years chairman. We offer our most sincere condolencest his family at this very sad time.                                                                                                                                

2016

      25th Nov. - Annual end of year coffee morning held at the Lakeside Plant Centre, Priorslee, Telford. A successful event raising £196 for the garden funds. Many thanks to supporters and the garden centre proprietors.

      19th Nov. - Final garden working party meet for 2016 although there will be ad hoc meetings to clear the paths of fallen leaves.                                                                                                                                        

23rd Oct. - Planted 200 dwarf wallflowers in the raised beds.                                                                                      

21st Oct. - Removed begonias from the raised beds and prepared them for the wallflowers.                                      

20th Sept. - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2016 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING. The award was presented to the garden committee at a presentation ceremony at The Assembly Rooms, Ludlow, Shropshire.                                                                                                                                                      

2nd July - RHS inspection for Heart of England in Bloom 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award' took place. Results will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held at a venue in Ludlow in September. Fingers crossed.                       

30 June - A colony of white tailed bumble bees have taken up residence in one of the bird boxes on the south wall.  

24th May - 100 pink and 100 white non-stop flowering begonias planted in raised beds.                                                 

    21st May - Wallflowers and tulips removed from raised beds ready for planting begonias. Two Idsall school pupils began helping in the garden as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme working in the community project.                

18th May - Annual General Meeting held, all officers and committee members re-elected.                                             

23rd April - A very successful and entertaining evening with Gabriela the 'Ukelele Lady' raised in excess of £300 for the  garden funds.                                                                                                                                                                           

5th March - First working party meet of the year. Roses and hydrangeas pruned and general tidying up of borders.             

2015

28th Nov. - Final working party of the year met.

27th Nov. - A very successful Coffee Morning was held at the Priorslee Plant Centre raising funds for the garden.

28th Oct. - Planted 200 mixed colour wallflower plants in the raised beds.

27th Oct. - Removed begonias from raised beds and prepared for planting wallflowers.

6th Oct. - A very successful Antiques Valuation Evening was held at Shifnal Village Hall. An extremely interesting and entertaining talk was given by TV celebrity and antiques expert Christina Trevanion which was followed by valuations by Christina and her business partner Aaron Dean. Many thanks to all who supported the event.

29th Sept. - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2015 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING. The award was presented to the garden committee at a presentation ceremony at Hogarths Hotel, Dorridge, West Midlands.

4th July - Visit from RHS 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award assessors, fingers crossed, have to wait until September for result.

17th June - 200 begonias (100 x Nonstop Mocca Yellow F1 and 100 x Tubby Red F1) planted in raised beds.

16th June - raised beds cleared of tulips and wallflowers.

13th May - Annual General Meeting held.

7th March - First meet of the year, plenty of weeding and pruning carried out.

2014

28th Nov. - Annual coffee morning held at Priorslee Plant Centre raising musch neeeded funds for the garden.

20th Sept. - A party of four members of the garden attended the opening of Dartmouth Park Sensory Garden, Sandwell at the invitation of the Friends of Dartmouth Park. A very enjoyable day was experienced.

19th Sept. - Presented with a Celebrating Shifnal 'Caring For Our Community' award by the High Sheriff of Shropshire at a service in St. Andrew's church.

18th Nov. - Planted 16 Iceberg roses supplied by David Austin Roses in the War memorial Rose Garden.

17th Sept. - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2014 'It's Your neighbourhood Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING also the Heart of England in Bloom RHS 'It's Your Neighbourhood Community Award'. The awards were presented at the garden committee at a presentation ceremony held at th Henley Golf & Country Club, Henley in Arden, Warks.

31st May - Two ground level areas were planted with dwarf sunflowers as further RHS Bloom celebrations.

30th May - 200 yellow begonias planted in the raised beds to celebrate the RHS 50 Years of Bloom. Others planted in ground level beds.

16th May - More accessible stand pip fitted.

7th May - AGM. Mr. Peter Drabble retired as chairman of the group after 16 years of service.

4th April - Musical Fun With Gabriela - 'The Ukelele Lady' held at St. Andrew's Youth Club, Bridgnorth Road, Shifnal was a great success raising much needed funds for the garden.

1st March - First meeting of the year in the garden. Weeding and pruning undertaken.

2013

29th Nov. - A very successful coffee morning held at the Priorslee Plant Centre raised in excess of £200.00.

2nd Nov. - Working party planted 1,200 daffodil, snowdrop, crocus and hyacinth bulbs mainly around the woodland walk and in the main garden area.

Sept. 19th - Royal Horticultural Society and Heart of England in Bloom 2013 'It's Your Neighbourhood Award' Level 5 OUTSTANDING. The award was presented to the Garden committee at a presentation ceremony held at the Tower Ballroom, Edgbaston, Birmingham.

14th Aug. - Contractor completed garden centre safety project funded by Shropshire Council Local Joint Committee for Shifnal and Sheriffhales.

16th July - Grant of £602 awarded by Shropshire Council Local Joint Committee (LJC) for Shifnal and Sheriffhales for garden centre safety project. Loose chippings to be removed from under benches in garden centre and replaced with concrete with chippings embedded in the surface.

14th June - Garden visited by group from Friends of Dartmouth Park, Sandwell. Although rain persisted for most of the time everyone enjoyed the visit.

4th June - A very successful flower demonstration by Nigel Whyles at the Park House Hotel, Shifnal raised £990.00 towards the cost of the recently opened woodland walk pathway.

25th April - The woodland walk pathway and resurfacing of part of the main pathways have been completed by the contractor. The woodland walk pathway winds its wat through the shrubs and trees, goes behind the pergola and runs adjacent to the south boundary wall.

18th April - Grant of £500.00 awarded by Shifnal Town Council for the repair and maintenance of the east ends of the main pathways through the garden.

19th March - Six different David Austin supplied climbing roses planted against the south wall behind the pergola.

9th March - Woodland walk pathway cleared of all vegetation by a group of 12 airmen from RAF Cosford. The pathway is now ready for the soil to be removed by a mini digger and then infilled and tarmac laid. Sufficient funds to complete the project are currently being raised and sought.

2nd March - First working party of the year met.

2012

10th Aug. - Shropshire Garden of the Year 2012. Winner of the 'Judges Special Award' sponsored by the Shropshire Star and the National Garden Scheme (NGS). The certificate was presented at the Shrewsbury Flower Show TV gardening expert Chris Beardshaw.

7th Aug. - Grant of £1,000.00 awarded by Shropshire  Council Local Joint Committee (LJC) for Shifnal and Sheriffhales towards the 'woodland walk' project. This project will create a serpentine pathway between the trees and bushes behind and to the left and right of the pergola and linking to the main pathway. The total cost will be £4,850.00 for which fund raising events are being explored.

12th July - Very sad news. It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of our landscape architect and trustee Simon Walding. Simon has worked with the garden since its inception and his input has been invaluable and paramount to its success. We offer our most sincere condolences to his family at this very sad time.

12th July - Shropshire Diamond Jubilee Pageant - RAF Cosford. Invited to attend as a Queen's Golden Jubilee Award winner and had a stand in hanger 3 showing the history of the garden. Our chairman was honoured to meet the Queen at the official reception.

21st May - Celebration of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the garden and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The recently erected pergola was dedicated and the combined choirs of St. Andrew's and Shifnal County Primary schools entertained then large audience. refreshments were served to all attendees free of charge.

12th May - Pergola erected and ground prepared for hardstanding and planting.

2nd May - Sparrow nest box fixed to boundary wall.

14th April - Cast iron plaque erected on the right of the entrance gate detailing important dates in the garden's short history.

17th March - First bi-monthly meeting of the year of the committee and friends of the garden, various tasks carried out including pruning, weeding and removal of some overgrown shrubs. Twelve assorted David Austin bare root roses planted in various areas of the garden.

10th March - Area to the rear of the sculpture of the 'Lady and the cat' cleared of all bushes, undergrowth and roots by a chief technician and a team of nine trainee airmen from Connelly Flight, Trenchard Squadron, RAF Cosford. This has prepared the site for the construction of the pergola.

22nd Feb. - Drop kerb laid on Innage Road pavement for easier access for wheel chairs, prams and pushchairs from the road, Thanks to Shropshire Council for carrying out this work.

22 Feb. - 12 Queen Mother roses planted to replace various shrubs lost during the winter of 2010/2011.

2011

29th Nov. - 16 tons of loose compost spread over the garden, all of which had to be wheelbarrowed in from a trailer. The work was carried out by members of the committee and a sergeant and a team of six airmen from Trenchard Squadron, RAF Cosford. The committee would like to thank the airmen for their tremendous effort in moving and spreading the compost.

22nd Oct. - Raised beds planted with wallflowers and tulip bulbs.

18th Oct. - All paths relaid for easier wheelchair access.
